In Desperate Need

If any of you have any good ideas for Young Women's activities please let me know! I am in charge of activities once a week for 8 girls, ages 16-18. If it was me, I'd do a craft of some sort, but from what Ive been told....girls don't dig crafts these days. So that leaves me in a bind! I will be forever in debt to you if you leave a comment with some ideas that you have done or you think would be fun.

Thanks a million!

Service activities are always good. Things that get the girls out in the community and seeing that they can make a difference. Soup kitchens, womens shelters, etc... you may be the only person who shows them this side of the world. Especially because kids these days are pretty entitled and have no idea that there are any struggling people out there. It ends up being fun too.
Also, exercise activities. For something different, get someones playstation or whatever and play dance dance Revolution and have a fun time competing and working out. Or teach yoga or pilates to them...something different they may not normally do for exercise.
Good Luck!

When I was in young womens I relied on the internet. Some of the websites I frequented were:

www.jennysmith.net
www.theideadoor.com
www.ldssplash.com

These sites have class activity ideas as well as combined ym/yw. They also have handouts and yw in excellence and new beginnings helps!

When you search on the internet be sure to type in "yw" lds activities and not "young women." You'll get more appropriate results :-)

Another great thing we did with our laurels was a college cooking night. They really enjoyed that.

okay, i saw the coolest idea. You could have the girls bring a portrait (side shot) of someone they love. You cut the picture out and paint it black - making a vintage-looking portrait. These are so gorgeous and make great gifts. See examples here:

:)

Good luck...you'll do great! You could also teach them cake decorating...

I have a few other ideas i'll send you way. :)

I saw bring on the crafts/cooking whatever... I know how good you are at them - and maybe they need a little instructions and they would start to "dig" them. Besides your enthusiasm would rub off on them and they wouldn't be able to help but have fun!

Plus, they just need to know some of that stuff.

Merianne! Is that you? Did you go to Ricks College 94-96? I'm looking for my old friend. Email me...Tray.Roberts@gmail.com Janene had lunch with Sally & Bub yesterday. They said you live in DC now, and you have a blog. So, I'm thinking this is you. I'd LOVE to chat with you! -Tracy

So I worked with the Laurels for four years, which means four years of mutual activites. I have a bunch written down that I'll email to you when I get a chance to pull them out. Good luck and have fun!

When I was Mia Maides advisor before we moved, I tried to think about the holidays. Halloween is coming up, and my favorite thing about Halloween is carving pumpkins! YW would love that, I bet. You could serve hot apple cider and pumpkin cookies or pumpkin bread. For Easter last year we found lots of fun things to do with dying eggs on the Martha Stewart website and made an activity of that. Once we had a cooking activity, where each girl brought something they had made. Then we sampled the food and shared recipes. I brought roll dough and taught the girls how to make those rolls where you wrap the dough around a marshmallow and then roll it in cinnamon sugar and bake it. The marshmallow 'evaporates' and makes a big hollow sugary hole in the middle, and so we call them Easter Morning Rolls, because they are like Christ's tomb on Easter morning. :) They liked learning how to make them, and enjoyed eating them straight out of the oven. Our girls also loved doorbell ditching families in our ward with plates of cookies and treats. That was their favorite thing to do. I could go on and on... I loved Young Womens!

Ok, so I am activity days leader for the 10-12 year olds and we had a great activity last month.
We had a newspaper fashion show that incorporated modesty.
I had them bring big bright belts, braclets, & accessories, and then we made outfits.
I had the red carpet(paper) runway and all modeled. I thought it would be a good thing, but it was even better than what I thought.
Good luck & if you find something that really works for you... send it my way.

Hey Mer it's Leanne. One of my favorite activities was doing a clothes-swap. Everyone went through their closets and brought stuff they didn't wear anymore and then we all traded! The leftovers went to the Salvation Army. Good luck with your calling- it sounds like fun!
